This Wednesday (March 15, 2017) promises to be a very special day for me, as I’ll be presenting on my birthday at the 10th anniversary Rice University Oil & Gas HPC Conference. You see, when have you a background in geophysics, the annual RiceU event is a birthday-worthy indulgence! The program for the 2017 event looks as compelling as ever, and Univa is proud to be making three contributions in addition to sponsoring the event again this year. In this blog post, I’ll introduce the first of the three contributions we’re making to the program.
The opening plenary session closes once again this year with the Disruptive Technology Track – a session featuring a 4-minute lightning talks and a poster. This is a track that Univa wholeheartedly embraced last year, where we showcased the disruption of containerizing HPC applications – i.e., oil/gas HPC applications running within Docker containers as workload managed by Univa Grid Engine.
For the 10th anniversary event, we’ve decided to take our disruptive efforts up a notch or three. Although containerization takes centre stage in this year’s contribution once again, it does so in a way that you might not expect … Specifically, we’ve containerized the scheduling capabilities inspired by Univa Grid Engine in the context of a Kubernetes-based container cluster. We believe the resulting product, Navops Command, will be especially useful for those organizations seeking to introduce containerization into their existing or net-new infrastructures. As we’ll illustrate with Machine Learning examples involving Apache Spark, this converged platform can handle your applications as they are (i.e., not containerized), and as they evolve – e.g., via refactoring or complete reimplementation for emerging micro services based architectures involving containerization. With this context, you’ll understand why we titled our talk and poster “Drilling Deep with Machine Learning as an Enterprise Enabled Micro Service”.
